Former Super Eagles Goalkeeper Peter Rufai Dies at 61

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai has reportedly passed away at the age of 61.

According to multiple local sources, Rufai died on Thursday morning, July 3, 2025, after battling an undisclosed illness. His death marks a major loss for Nigerian football, as he was widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest goalkeepers.

Rufai, fondly known as “Dodo Mayana,” earned 65 caps for the Nigerian national team and played a pivotal role in their triumph at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations. He also represented Nigeria at two FIFA World Cups—in 1994 and 1998.

Tributes have begun pouring in from fans, football officials, and former teammates, all remembering Rufai as a legend who gave his all for the green and white.
