A member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Nwoba Chika Nwoba, has been arrested by the state police command for exposing the alleged embezzlement of N3 billion by the state’s Commerce and Industry Commissioner, Oguzo Offia Nwali.

Mr Nwoba had raised concerns about the misuse of funds designated for the empowerment of street vendors in the state.

The allegations of misuse of funds and diversion of resources were specific, and Mr Nwoba promised to involve the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) if the state government fails to act.

However, Mrs Nwali has denied any wrongdoing and challenged the credibility of the allegations, questioning the motives behind Nwoba’s accusations.

How Mr Nwoba was arrested.

Mr. Nwoba Chika Nwoba’s younger sister, Nwoba Oluebube Cynthia, was seemingly abducted by individuals posing as kidnappers, and taken to the Anambra State Police Command.

This move appeared to contravene the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) of 2015, which expressly forbids such actions. Despite the provisions laid out in the ACJA, instances of individuals being arrested in place of suspects continue to occur, often with impunity.

Mr Nwoba’s ordeal unfolded when he responded to his sister’s distress call and arrived at the police station in Awka, only to be promptly apprehended by officers from the Ebonyi State Command.

He was then swiftly transported back to Ebonyi. Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochi, claimed no knowledge of Mr Nwoba’s re-arrest but assured that further information would be provided.

Efforts to obtain a response from the Ebonyi State Police Command regarding this incident were unsuccessful.
