Communal Clash Erupts, Homes Burned in Benue

A fresh communal clash broke out on Saturday between residents of Mbaiase community in Gwer East Local Government Area and Igbinde village in Konshisha LGA of Benue State, leading to widespread destruction and several homes being set ablaze.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the incident on Sunday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), indicating that the violence erupted around 9:30 a.m. when suspected militias from Mbaiase allegedly launched an attack on Igbinde, which falls under the Mbagusa/Mbatser Council Ward of Konshisha.

Sources quoted by Makama reported that numerous thatched houses were set on fire and properties vandalized during the assault. As of press time, no casualties had been confirmed.

Troops from Operation Whirl Stroke, supported by other security agencies, were quickly deployed to the area to curb the violence and restore order.

In response, stakeholders from both local governments, including traditional rulers and council chairmen, have commenced peace talks aimed at resolving the renewed hostilities and finding a lasting solution to the protracted inter-communal tensions.

Meanwhile, security operatives have intensified surveillance and patrols in the affected communities to prevent reprisal attacks and reassure residents of their safety.
