Baltimore Bridge Collapses Following Ship Collision in the US
A ship collided with a major key bridge in US City of Baltimore on Tuesday, causing it to collapse and sending vehicles into the water..
A police spokesperson from the Baltimore Police Department said it was possible that people were in the river during the incident.
“I can confirm at 1:35 am that, Baltimore City police were notified of a partial bridge collapse, with workers possibly in the water, at the Francis Scott Key Bridge,” Detective Niki Fennoy said.
The bridge, which consists of four lanes, spans the Patapsco River, located southwest of Baltimore. With more than 11 million vehicles passing through annually, it has been in operation since 1977..
It is a major part of the road network around Baltimore, an industrial city on the US East Coast next to the capital Washington DC.
According to a statement given to the Baltimore Sun news, Kevin Cartwright from the Baltimore Fire Department said that, “We have reason to believe that there were vehicles and possibly a tractor-trailer that went into the water, and the entire bridge had collapsed”.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr both confirmed that they were aware of the incident and that rescue efforts were underway..
