Amaechi Backs Power Rotation, Says He’ll Serve One Term If Elected President In 2027

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has expressed support for Nigeria’s North-South power rotation arrangement and pledged to serve only a single term if elected president in 2027.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Thursday, Amaechi said his stance is rooted in national interest and fairness.
When asked if he would accept to serve just one term as the presidential candidate of the newly formed African Democratic Congress (ADC), he responded, “Of course. I told you. You know I speak my mind. If I won’t do more than four years, I would say that. If I were to do more than four years, I would say I would do more than four.”
Nigeria operates an informal power-sharing arrangement, rotating the presidency between the North and South. President Bola Tinubu, from the South-West, succeeded Muhammadu Buhari from the North-West in 2023 after Buhari completed two terms.
As discussions around the 2027 general election intensify, the issue of zoning continues to dominate the political space. While the ADC has yet to reveal which region it plans to zone its presidential ticket to, Amaechi made it clear that the principle of rotation must be upheld.
“For now, the way Nigeria is, you must keep to that agreement—unwritten agreement—that says South eight years, North eight years,” he emphasized.
