Alex Ekwueme Federal University Claims 3 Gold, 4 Silver, and 6 Bronze Medals in SEUGA

Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State has won 13 medals in the just-concluded Southeast Universities Games (SEUGA) held at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State from 24th to 31st January 2024.

This was contained in a press statement signed by Elom Iyke Ubochi, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, on Wednesday.

The University achieved a great feat in the students’ sports competition, winning 3 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals. This impressive medal haul helped the university secure the 4th position in the overall medals’ table, out of 9 universities that participated in the games. It’s worth noting that this is the highest position and medal tally the university has achieved since it was established approximately 13 years ago.

Reports says that,the university participated in 5 events – football (male & female), Chess (male & female), table tennis (male & female), volleyball (male) and scrabble (male & female). Asonze Great, a 400 level student of Business Administration was the star of the competition as he won 2 gold medals in Chess, thus setting the competition’s record of the highest number and class of medal won by a single individual while David Ibeke of the Department of Economics and Development Studies won gold in table tennis while Esther Chinyere Asogananya of Medicine & Surgery won 1 silver and 1 bronze. More so, Sochimaobi Cynthia Irundu of the Department of Science Education won 1 silver and 2 bronze medals; Samuel Promise Amarachi of Anatomy department won 1 silver while Munachimso Nwandu of Economics department won 1 silver and 1 bronze medals and Ediomo Okon of the Department of Civil Engineering won a bronze.

The female football team of the university also won a bronze medal.

While congratulating the students for their sterling performances at the competition, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sunday Elom noted that their accomplishments have gone a long way to underscore the reputation of the university as one of the most serious public universities in Nigeria.

He maintained that the university is not just reputable for the seriousness of its academic activities but also respected for the accomplishments of its students in extracurricular activities such as sports, debates and public speaking.

He further promised to host and reward the students for being good ambassadors of the university.
