Abuja Metro Line Nears Completion, Set for May Inauguration

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, confirmed that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit Scheme, also known as the metro line, will be inaugurated in May of this year.
Mr Wike made this statement on Friday during a visit to inspect the progress of the ongoing renovation and rehabilitation works on the metro line.
He expressed confidence that the project was nearing completion, with 97 per cent progress, and would be commissioned by President Bola Tinubu in May to mark his first year in office.
During the inspection, he took the train from Abuja Metro Station in the Central Business District to the Airport Train Station and noted the advancements at various train stations along the route.
āI want to say that as of yesterday, Mr President has approved the schedule for the commissioning of projects for his one year in office. This is a very important project. Those of us who rode on the metro line, you will see that itās more convenient to use the metro line than even the vehicles to go to the airport.”
āSo, Iām impressed with the contractor, CCECC. They have assured us that all the renovation works will be ready before the commissioning date.”
āI believe this will be the first project that Mr. President will like to inaugurate because itās very key to the development of the economy, particularly as the FCT is concerned.”
āSo, for me, itās a dream come true and we are happy that after all is said and done, the metro line will be in use for Nigerians come May 2024,” he said.
Mr Wike emphasised that the FCTA had fulfilled its contractual obligations to the contractors.
He stressed the need to balance cost-saving measures with the FCT’s interests, particularly regarding personnel training and operational expenses.
Regarding plans for extending rail services to densely populated areas like Nyanya, Mr Wike explained that the Abuja mass rail project progresses in phases due to financial considerations.
However, he assured that such expansions would be considered as development efforts continue in the FCT.
Mr Wike also reiterated plans for constructing three bus terminals dedicated to specific routes in the FCT.
