Getting started as a newbie freelancer comes with several challenges. One of which is the misconceptions otherwise known as freelancing myths sold to rookie freelancers at the beginning of their career. And if you don’t ignore them, it can make your journey dead on arrival.

There are several of these misconceptions. Unfortunately, you might have believed some of them ignorantly.

However, in this article, you will discover 3 most popular widely held beliefs (myths) about freelancing that are not true and why you should ignore them.

Myths #1 – No One Guarantees Your Job Security in Freelancing. 

This is one of the false beliefs that people unbelievably subscribe to when they are confronted with the decision to start freelancing. To be honest, their fear isn’t misguided. Why? Job security is one of human basic needs according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

Having job security puts the mind of an employee at rest to give his all in his job without having to feel agitated that he can be fired at any time. Everyone loves comfort and we all are afraid of whatever that endangers our job. 

But in freelancing, there’s no such thing as “having no job security”. This is because you work for different clients and use your professional skill to help them solve their problems. 

If one of your clients chooses not to work with you again, you still have other clients you have secured before to work with.

So, losing a client out of many clients you work for isn’t equivalent to losing a job as the case might have been had it been you are working for an organization as a full-time and permanent employee.

Myths #2 ­- As a Freelancer You Are Your Own Boss. 

Well, I will be honest with you here. While it’s true to an extent that you are your own boss, it’s however not completely true. People are predisposed to think that once you have a business, you are your own boss and nobody can fire you as the case may be if you are working for someone.   

Unfortunately, this isn’t completely true.  Everyone has a boss. If you are into business, your customers and clients are your boss. If they refuse to patronize you, how do you survive? Isn’t this same thing as being sacked by your boss if you are fully employed? 

In freelancing, you have multiple bosses who have every right to tell you how they want their work to be. And they might decide to discontinue the transactional engagement between you both if they find no satisfaction in the services you offer to them. Therefore, without them, there won’t be you.

Hence, in freelancing, you have a boss. Get it? Good.

Myths #3 – You need a Degree to start Freelancing

Have you ever heard that you need a degree to start freelancing? You see, that’s totally false. Getting started with freelancing does not require a degree. In fact, you don’t need a certificate to be a freelancer.

So, what exactly do you need? Listen skill is the only thing you need to start your freelancing. As long as you have a skill to offer as services to your clients then you are 70% ready to start freelancing.

70% ready because you still need essential skills in communication, collaboration and learning to work remotely if you must succeed as a freelancer. Meanwhile, you don’t need a degree to acquire these skills.

However, in some cases, you may need to get certain certification to increase your level of success as a freelancer. But the intriguing thing is there are several certification programs you can take online. Yet, it all depends on the goals you want to achieve as a freelancer.
