Nigerian Lady Loses ₦1.5 Million to Scammers After Contacting Fake Bank Support

A Nigerian woman has shared her harrowing experience of losing ₦1.5 million to scammers after unknowingly engaging with a fake customer support account while trying to report a banking issue.

The victim, identified by her X (formerly Twitter) handle, @Haneefahjumoke, explained that the ordeal began when she transferred ₦35,000 to a friend using her Zenith Bank account. After encountering a minor issue with the transaction, she attempted to contact the bank’s official customer service through various social media platforms but received no immediate response.

While waiting, a fraudulent account posing as Zenith Bank responded to her inquiry and directed her to fill out a complaint form. Believing the account to be genuine, she complied.

Shortly after submitting the form, she began receiving debit alerts—three separate transactions of ₦500,000 each—amounting to a total loss of ₦1.5 million.

In her post, she lamented:

“It all started from frame 1. I transferred ₦35k to a friend this morning via @ZenithBank. I was debited, she was credited. I messaged their customer care on all social media handles, trying to lodge a complaint. They weren’t responding until a fake handle replied.”

She further expressed her distress over the bank’s response:

“@ZenithBank is saying it’s a 90:10 thing since it’s a Webpay fraudulent transaction. I’m losing it 😭😭😭😭😭”

Haneefahjumoke also shared the phone numbers and accounts linked to the scammers to warn others:

“+2348078582708, +2349118348675, and +2348126140721 are the fake customer care numbers. The scam handle was @Zenithbank_ZRWn. @cenbank @ZenithBank please come to my aid—I’m dying 😭😭😭😭”

She concluded her thread by calling out the bank for failing to respond adequately:

“#35,000 complaint made me lose ₦1.5m 💔😭 @thekorahq @ZenithBank It’s close to 48 hours now! @ZenithBank, you can’t say you haven’t seen the tags! The least you can do is update me on the investigation instead of making me feel like a fool.”
