Whisper to Humanity, a youth-led feminist organization, has commenced a 3-day Transformative Education training for students and teachers in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

The 3-day programme “Empowering Educators and Learners for Transformative Education” aims to equip teachers and students. It focuses on skills for transformative education and safe learning environments.

The training, which kicked off on Thursday, brought together teachers and students from various secondary schools across Ebonyi State, who arrived at the venue yesterday, eager to enhance their skills for transformative education and safe learning environments.

Mary Jacob Okwuosa, Executive Director of Whisper to Humanity, spoke on transformative education. She reiterated that the training aims to raise the subconsciousness of children. It also focuses on learners. It also seeks to pay attention to what the children need.

“Our goal is to raise the consciousness of children and learners, understanding their needs and creating a safe space for growth,” Okwuosa emphasized.

She advocated for an inclusive learning environment and social justice in a learning environment where every child should air their views.

She urged students, teachers, and stakeholders to adopt transformative education practices. These practices should ensure safe learning environments. They should also promote inclusive and social justice-oriented education. Additionally, they need to implement effective conflict resolution mechanisms.

Participants engaged in pairing, dating sessions, and group tasks. These activities aimed at sharing identity and privileges. They focused on identifying problems in the school environment. Participants also offered solutions to these problems and fears with partners. The goal was to build friendships and relationships among the students, teachers, and others.

During the breakout sessions, teachers and students shared valuable insights. They discussed creating inclusive and supportive learning environments. These environments enable Transformative Education.

Teachers recommended strategies. They suggested inclusive classroom activities, equity among learners, and group learning. Other strategies include storytelling, the play-way method, and the use of teaching aids. Teachers also emphasized special attention to learners and creating conducive learning environments.

On the other hand, students presented their wish list for a safe and engaging learning experience and Transformative Education. They wanted ICT equipment and well-equipped science laboratories. Their concerns also included accessible libraries and learning centers. They requested qualified teachers and school counselors. They valued kind and considerate teachers. There should be zero tolerance for examination malpractices.

While speaking, the Director of Educational Services, Ministry of Education, Ebonyi State, Mrs. Chinyere Eziulo emphasized the urgent need for a paradigm shift (Transformative Education) in Ebonyi State’s education system.

“I want to encourage our teachers and even the students to have accepting thoughts… Let’s promote accepting thoughts and behaviors,” she said.

The Director highlighted the alarming rate of bullying and discrimination in schools, urging educators and students to take collective action.

“Bullying, in all its forms, has no place in our schools… You see the senior students bullying the junior ones, and you see the gender – the other way – bullying the other gender,” she noted.

She further emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating, “Nigeria is diverse, we have different cultures… Let’s foster inclusivity and integration. When you meet someone new, don’t discriminate based on appearance or background.”

The Director concluded by encouraging participants to create a supportive community that encourages Transformative Education.

“Create a supportive community where everyone feels at home… Whatever you were taught today, transmit it to another person,” she urged.

Today’s session also featured playful learning, practical teaching on teamwork, advocacy,Radio drama presentation, games, refreshments, and group photographs.
