Wike Renames Abuja International Conference Centre After President Tinubu

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has officially renamed the Abuja International Conference Centre as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, in honor of Nigeria’s current president.

Wike made the announcement during the inauguration ceremony of the newly renovated facility on Tuesday in Abuja. He revealed that several halls within the complex have also been renamed to recognize key government officials who have supported the FCT administration.

According to Wike, individual halls within the centre now bear the names of Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola (though he referred to the CJN by surname Kekere-Ekun in his remarks).

“In honouring those who’ve supported the FCT, we’ve named the halls after major figures from the three arms of government,” Wike said. “But the entire facility, being a federal property, will now be known as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.”

Wike explained that the centre, originally constructed in 1991 during military rule, had remained untouched for decades until its recent overhaul under President Tinubu’s administration.

“This project sat idle for years, but in just eight months of President Tinubu’s leadership, we have this beautiful structure to show,” he stated.

He also noted that, going forward, the use of the facility will no longer be free—even for government entities—emphasizing the need for maintenance and sustainability.

“Whether you’re a ministry or agency, if you want to use this place, you must pay something. We can’t continue allowing people to use it for free under the guise of friendship or connections,” Wike added.
