WAEC Explains Nighttime English Exam, Cites Security Measures and Apologizes for Delay

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has addressed widespread concerns after students in several Nigerian states were forced to write their English Language paper late into the night on Wednesday.
Reports from states including Oyo, Ogun, Benue, and Osun revealed that candidates took the crucial WASSCE exam under poor lighting conditions due to the late arrival of exam materials.
Responding to the backlash, WAEC’s spokesperson, Moyosola Adeshina, released a statement attributing the delay to strategic security and logistical measures aimed at preventing exam material leaks and ensuring the credibility of the test.
“While we understand the disruption this caused, our primary objective was to safeguard the integrity of the examination,” the statement read.
WAEC acknowledged the challenges that affected the smooth and timely delivery of papers and expressed regret over the inconvenience.
“We recognise the importance of timely conduct of examinations and the impact of this decision on candidates, schools, and parents. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused,” the council stated, reaffirming its commitment to upholding examination standards and academic excellence.
