U.S. Reduces Most Nigerian Visas to Single Entry With Three-Month Validity

The United States Department of State has updated its visa policy for Nigerian citizens, announcing that most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas will now be issued as single-entry visas valid for only three months.
The announcement was made in a statement by the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria and takes immediate effect.
“Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period,” the statement said.
However, the Embassy clarified that all visas issued before July 8, 2025, will still remain valid according to their original terms.
The U.S. government explained that visa reciprocity is a global practice that is regularly reviewed and can be changed at any time, including adjustments to how long a visa lasts and how many entries are allowed.
According to the statement, the U.S. is working with the Nigerian government to ensure the country meets the necessary standards for longer or multiple-entry visas. These standards include:
- Having secure and verifiable travel documents
- Properly managing visa overstays
- Sharing important security and criminal information
The Embassy praised Nigeria’s efforts to align with international best practices and said discussions are ongoing to address remaining issues.
“We commend the ongoing efforts by the Government of Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies to meet standards of international best practices,” the U.S. Mission said.
Nigerian travelers were advised to follow the terms of their visas carefully and to make sure their travel documents are authentic and up to date.
The Embassy also reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to strengthening its relationship with Nigeria through education, business, and cultural exchanges.
“The United States remains a committed partner in deepening people-to-people ties with Nigeria. We look forward to continued cooperation at all levels,” the statement added.
