Gunmen open fire at meeting venue in Anambra, 19 reportedly dead

Gunmen in military uniform, on Sunday, stormed Agba community in the Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, killing two persons.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Joshua Ukandu, said the command was on top of the matter, adding that operatives of the command had been deployed to the area.

He noted that a top investigation was ongoing to unravel what might have caused the attack and urged the people to be calm.

Also, the Chairman of Ishielu Council, Mrs Peace Agwu, had in her Facebook Page confirmed the incident, saying she was appalled and deeply saddened by the recent act of senseless killing that occurred in Agba community,” but she quickly deleted the post later.

When our correspondent contacted the LG chairman on the telephone and via a Whatsapp message to react to the incident, she did not pick her call and did not reply the message either as of the time of filing this report.

We gathered that the gunmen stormed the community around 6 pm on the fateful day in military uniform, asking who the commissioner was and when they were not well attended to, they opened fire and started shooting sporadically.

It was further gathered that in the process, two persons were killed – one Sunday Onyibe, who was the Chairman of Tipper Union and another indigene of the community, name withheld, who returned from abroad.

The gunmen robbed a phone shop and made away with all the phones and took the bike of the other dead person.

In a chat with our correspondent, an indigene of the community who identified himself as Ben, said the gunmen masked their faces and entered the community around 6 pm wearing military uniforms.

He said when they could not get the commissioner, they started shooting sporadically, and in the process Sunday Onyibe was killed.

He noted that the other person was on top of his bike, making a call when they approached him, demanding his phone, but he refused. So, they shot him and took his bike.

He confirmed that the phone shop was robbed and that despite the visit of the Chairman of the council and the DPO Ishielu Division to the area to calm the situation, the community had not come out of the shock.
