Tinubu Expects More Defections To APC Ahead Of 2027 Elections

President Bola Tinubu has said he expects more politicians to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a national summit in Abuja on May 22, 2025, Tinubu described the ongoing political realignments as a natural part of the democratic process, emphasizing that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of movement and association.
The APC recently endorsed Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election, amid a wave of defections from opposition parties including the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). High-profile figures such as Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa have joined the APC, signaling a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Supporters of the APC attribute these defections to satisfaction with Tinubu’s governance, pointing to the administration’s performance as a key factor. However, some opposition leaders remain skeptical, warning that the influx of defectors could lead to internal tensions within the party. Critics also argue that many defections are motivated by fear rather than genuine loyalty.
The presidency has rejected claims of coercion, affirming that defections are voluntary and reflect the democratic rights of individuals to freely associate. As the 2027 elections draw closer, these political movements are set to shape the future of Nigeria’s political scene.
