Step-by-Step Guide On How to Correct Your NIN Details Online (Name, Phone Number & Date of Birth)

Did you know you can now correct your Name, Phone Number, or Date of Birth linked to your National Identification Number (NIN) without visiting a NIMC office?
Thanks to the NIMC Self-Service Modification Portal, you can now make these changes from the comfort of your home or office.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it:
Step 1: Visit the Official Portal
Go to the NIMC Self-Service Modification Portal:
https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng
Step 2: Register or Log In
If you’re using the portal for the first time:
- Click on “Create Account”
- Fill in your full name, email address, phone number
- Complete the facial capture using your device’s camera
- Set up a secure password to access the portal
If you already have an account, just log in.
Step 3: Use a Recommended Device
For best results:
- Use a strong internet-enabled device
- Preferably a computer/laptop (the portal works best on desktops)
Step 4: Select the Information You Want to Modify
Once logged in, choose the specific change you want to make:
Modification Type | Applicable Fee |
Name Change | ₦2,030 |
Phone Number | ₦2,030 |
Date of Birth | ₦29,002.61 |
Note: Payments can be made online via the portal using secure channels.
Step 5: For Date of Birth Changes – Complete NPC Attestation First
Before modifying your Date of Birth, you must first complete your birth attestation or birth registration via the National Population Commission (NPC):
Visit: https://attestation.nationalpopulation.gov.ng
You’ll be required to upload the necessary documents and get a digital attestation certificate.
Step 6: Submit and Wait for Approval
Once you’ve completed your modifications and made payment:
- Submit your request
- You’ll receive notifications via email/SMS as your request is processed
Approval timelines vary depending on the type of change.
Important Reminders
- You only have a limited number of modification attempts, so be sure your documents and details are accurate.
- If you’re unable to complete the process online, visit the nearest NIMC office to get it done.
- Use correct and matching documents like birth certificates, affidavits, or court orders for name changes.
Don’t fall victim to fraud! Use only the official NIMC portal and avoid sharing your NIN or OTP with third parties.
