President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged state governors to focus on grassroots development, assuring them that local government autonomy isn’t meant to diminish their authority.
Tinubu made this known during a New Year meeting with governors, led by Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos.
The President emphasized the need for cooperation, saying state leadership is vital for achieving food security, economic growth, and national progress.
Debunking rumors of conflicts over local government autonomy, Tinubu assured governors that collaboration is key to development, not a takeover.
“You control your local governments. Let’s work together to fulfill the people’s expectations and build a prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
Tinubu also stressed the importance of agriculture, urging governors to leverage their control of land for increased productivity and economic stability.
“You are central to Nigeria’s prosperity. Let’s grow more, work harder, and stabilize our currency,” the President added.
In response, Governor Abdulrazaq assured Tinubu of the governors’ support, highlighting progress made due to economic restructuring and increased funding.
