Peter Obi Hints He May Not Run in 2027

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has stated that he is not desperate to become Nigeria’s president, underscoring that his main concern is the country’s progress rather than personal ambition.
Obi made this clear last Saturday during a special Sabbath service in Umuahia, Abia State, held to commemorate the second anniversary of Governor Alex Otti’s administration.
The former Anambra State governor suggested that while many are already speculating about his potential candidacy in 2027, his focus remains on advocating for good governance and supporting those currently in positions of leadership—especially when they are delivering real change.
“It’s not about personal ambition,” Obi said. “I’m not desperate to be president. What I’m desperate about is seeing this country work. That’s all I care about.”
Observers say Obi’s comments may indicate a possible reluctance to re-enter the 2027 presidential race, especially given the intense pressures and structural challenges of leading Nigeria.
He commended Governor Otti—a fellow LP member—for the progress made in Abia State, describing his work as a visible departure from past governance styles and a testament to what’s possible when leadership is committed and focused.
“We came to celebrate two years of transformation,” Obi said. “People often say they need eight or more years to make an impact. But I’ve always said one day can make a difference. Everyone can see what’s happening here—you don’t need a radio to tell you. It’s obvious.”
Obi urged the people of Abia to give Governor Otti maximum support and remain engaged in the process of rebuilding the state.
In his remarks, Governor Otti attributed his administration’s success to divine support, acknowledging that effort alone cannot guarantee results without God’s favor.
“That’s why we are here,” Otti said. “We’ve worked hard, but success ultimately comes from God.”
Otti also thanked Obi for his continuous support and the Seventh-day Adventist Church for its prayers and encouragement.
Earlier in the service, Pastor Enyinnaya Uguru, former president of the Abia North Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, cautioned leaders against complacency, urging them to stay focused and grounded.
Preaching on the theme “At the Fullness of Time,” Pastor Uguru highlighted how Otti’s perseverance through earlier electoral disappointments prepared him for his current role. “Periods of delay are periods of preparation,” he said.
He praised Otti’s administration for its visible achievements, saying, “You’re doing well. I say this not out of sentiment but based on evidence.”
