NYSC Relocation: A Step-By-Step Guide

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a significant phase in the lives of Nigerian graduates, designed to foster national unity, integration, and development. Sometimes, circumstances may arise that necessitate NYSC Relocation.

This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process of redeploying to another state during your National Youth Service.

Understanding the Need for Redeployment:

Before considering redeployment, evaluate your reasons thoroughly. Some common reasons include family emergencies, health concerns, or personal safety. Ensure that your reasons are valid and cannot be resolved through alternative means, such as communication with your current place of primary assignment (PPA) or discussing your concerns with NYSC officials.

Gathering Required Documents:

To initiate the redeployment process, you will need the following documents:

a. Valid identity card (original and photocopy)

b. Call-up letter (original and photocopy)

c. Completed and endorsed ‘Clearance Form’ from your current LGA/Local Government Inspector

d. Certificate of State of Origin (original and photocopy)

e. Passport photographs

Obtaining Clearance from Your Current LGA:

Visit your current Local Government Area (LGA) office and submit the required documents to the NYSC Liaison Officer or NYSC Local Government Inspector. They will assess your request and, if valid, endorse your Clearance Form.

Completing the Redeployment Form:

Obtain the ‘Request for Redeployment Form’ from the NYSC Secretariat in your current state of service. Fill in the form with accurate and up-to-date information, including your personal details, reasons for redeployment, and preferred state of deployment. Attach a passport photograph and obtain the necessary signatures from your current LGA officials.

Submitting the Redeployment Form:

Submit the completed ‘Request for Redeployment Form’ to the NYSC Secretariat in your current state. They will process your request and forward it to the NYSC National Directorate Headquarters (NDHQ) in Abuja for approval.

Awaiting Approval from NYSC NDHQ:

The NYSC NDHQ will review your request and either approve or disapprove your redeployment. If approved, you will receive an ‘Approval for Redeployment’ letter. If disapproved, you will be notified accordingly, and you may need to reconsider your options or seek further clarification.

Reporting to the New State:

Upon receiving the ‘Approval for Redeployment’ letter, report to the NYSC Secretariat in your new state of deployment. Follow the steps below:

Register with the new LGA:

Visit the NYSC Secretariat in your new state and register with the Local Government Inspector. They will assign you a new PPA and provide you with the necessary guidance and support.

Collect Your New Clearance Form:

Obtain a new clearance form from the new LGA and submit it to the NYSC Local Government Inspector for endorsement. Ensure you complete all required tasks and fulfil your obligations in your new state.

Collect Your NYSC Call-Up Letter and Other Documents:

Retrieve your updated call-up letter, certificate of state of origin, and any other relevant documents from the NYSC Secretariat in your new state. These documents will be crucial for your service year.

Attend the orientation course:

Participate in the mandatory orientation course organized by the NYSC in your new state. This course is designed to equip you with essential skills and knowledge to excel during your service year.

Commence Your New PPA:

Begin your primary assignment at the new place of posting, adhering to the guidelines and instructions provided by your new PPA supervisors and NYSC officials.

After the NYSC relocation, what next?

Upon receiving approval for redeployment to another state during your NYSC service, it is crucial to report to your newly assigned Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) and commence your service year. Additionally, you must inform your new Local Government Inspector (LGI) about your relocation and provide them with all essential documents. This will help facilitate a seamless integration into your new service environment and ensure a successful experience in your new state.

When you are assigned a new place of primary assignment (PPA) during your NYSC service due to relocation, it is essential to understand that your overall service duration remains unchanged, and you will still complete the mandatory 12 months of service. You are expected to participate in all NYSC activities, such as Community Development Service (CDS) and other programs organized by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

In the event of a relocation, you should:

1. Travel to your new state and report to the NYSC Secretariat.

2. Submit your relocation request to the NYSC Secretariat in your new state.

3. Obtain a new PPA assignment in your new location.

4. Inform your new Local Government Inspector (LGI) about your relocation and provide the necessary documents.

5. Fully engage in all NYSC activities within your new state.

6. Complete your mandatory 12 months of service.

There are several potential advantages to NYSC relocation, such as:

a. Increased monthly allowance due to cost-of-living adjustments in your new location.

d. the potential loss of the opportunity to fully experience and benefit from the 1-year service program in your original state.

e. the possibility of being posted to an unfavourable environment in your new location.

The NYSC online relocation process typically takes about three months after the camp orientation exercise. To initiate the relocation, you must submit an application to the respective state coordinators for approval.

To check the status of your NYSC relocation approval.

log in to the official NYSC portal and navigate to your dashboard. Here, you can regularly monitor updates concerning your relocation application.

If you have received approval for NYSC relocation but have changed your mind, you can cancel the relocation. To do this, visit the NYSC secretariat in the state you were relocated to, provide reasons for your decision to cancel, and write a letter titled “Cancellation of Relocation Application to (Name of the State)”. After a few days, you will be informed about the cancellation, and you can return to your original posting state. Remember, both the application and cancellation processes must be completed within three months, and relocated corps members should report to their new state within 21 days of approval.

In case you missed the opportunity to apply for NYSC relocation during the 21-day orientation camp period,

You can still apply 3 months into your service year. However, you must provide valid reasons for the late application, such as health issues, security concerns, or marriage. To initiate the process, visit the NYSC Local Government Inspector (LGI) or the state secretariat where you are currently serving and submit a letter explaining your reasons for relocation.

If your state code changes after the NYSC relocation process, report to the NYSC secretariat in your new state and inform them of the change. They will update your records with the new state code accordingly.

If you were approved for NYSC relocation but received a different state

If you were approved for NYSC relocation but received a different state, report to the NYSC secretariat in the state you were posted to promptly. This is crucial to resolve any issues and ensure a smooth service year, with proper registration and assignment to a primary place of assignment in your new location.

NYSC Monthly Allowance

Regarding your monthly allowance after relocation, you need to open a new bank account in the state you have been relocated to. Visit the NYSC secretariat in your new state, where they will guide you through the process of opening a new account and arranging for your allowance payments.

While it is possible to apply for NYSC relocation twice, it is essential to have a genuine and reasonable reason for your request. The NYSC management will assess your reasons before granting approval. Remember, the relocation process should be completed within the initial three months of your service year.
