Nigeria Has No Business With Nuclear Weapons – Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed Nigeria’s stance against nuclear weapons, stating that the country is fully committed to a total ban on nuclear testing.
Speaking on Monday, July 7, during a courtesy visit by Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), at the Presidential Villa, Shettima emphasized that Africa’s focus should remain on addressing more pressing issues like poverty and climate change.
“The outcome of any nuclear conflict is never a win-win situation; it is always the opposite,” he said. “We are fighting poverty, we are tackling the challenges between economy and ecology in sub-Saharan Africa. We have no business dabbling in anything related to nuclear weapons.”
Shettima assured the CTBTO of Nigeria’s continued commitment to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), commending the organisation’s global monitoring efforts.
“I want to reiterate our support for a comprehensive nuclear test ban and appreciate your organisation for its vigilance, with 337 monitoring stations across the globe. All seven tests conducted by DPR Korea were successfully detected,” he added.
