NAFDAC Warns Nigerians About Unregistered “Fair Child Soap”

The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert regarding the circulation of an unregistered product, “Fair Child Soap,” in Nigeria.
The warning follows a complaint about the unethical marketing and use of skin-lightening products targeting minors.
During routine post-market surveillance in Lagos, NAFDAC discovered the unregistered cosmetic soap being sold in various retail outlets. The product, marketed by Lexmart Cosmetics Ltd. and aimed at children, features misleading and deceptive labeling.
NAFDAC confirmed that the soap is imported, with plans for local manufacturing, but it lacks NAFDAC registration and authorization for distribution in Nigeria. The agency has sanctioned Lexmart Cosmetics Ltd. and ordered an immediate halt to further distribution.
NAFDAC highlighted serious health risks associated with the soap’s skin-lightening claims, particularly for children, including potential skin damage, exposure to harmful or banned substances, and long-term dermatological effects.
Product Details:
- Product Name: Fair Child Soap
- Marketed by: Lexmart Cosmetics Ltd.
NAFDAC urges healthcare professionals and consumers to report any suspected sale or distribution of unregistered or substandard products to the nearest NAFDAC office, via the toll-free number 0800-162-3322, or by emailing sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
