Liverpool to Pay Remaining Two Years of Diogo Jota’s Contract to His Family After Tragic Death

Liverpool Football Club has made the compassionate decision to pay out the remaining two years of Diogo Jota’s contract to his family following the striker’s tragic death in a car accident on July 3, 2025.
Jota, 28, and his younger brother, André Silva, died in a fatal crash in Zamora, Spain. The Portuguese forward had recently signed a contract extension with Liverpool that would have kept him at Anfield until 2027, reportedly earning £140,000 per week — totaling approximately £14.5 million over the next two years.
In a show of deep solidarity, Liverpool has confirmed it will honor the full value of his contract to support Jota’s wife, Rute, and their three young children. The club’s gesture reflects its strong commitment to standing by players and their families in times of profound grief.
Club officials, including manager Arne Slot, traveled to Portugal to attend Jota’s funeral and offer personal condolences. At Anfield, thousands of fans have also paid tribute, leaving flowers, scarves, and handwritten messages outside the stadium.
In addition to the financial support, Liverpool has also retired Jota’s number 20 jersey — a touching tribute to a player who played a key role in the club’s recent success, including helping secure their historic 20th league title.
The club’s actions have been widely praised as a demonstration of football’s deeper human values — loyalty, compassion, and family.
