IPOB Reacts to Buhari’s Death, Says Kanu Has Been Vindicated

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has responded to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the development as long-overdue validation of claims made by its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued by IPOB’s spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, the group said Kanu had, since 2017, consistently questioned Buhari’s health and presence in public life—claims many at the time dismissed as unfounded.
Reacting to the official announcement by Buhari’s former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirming the ex-president’s death, IPOB urged Nigerians to reflect deeply on the nation’s political history between 2017 and 2023.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu spoke on sensitive national matters that many ignored or ridiculed,” the statement read. “Recent developments highlight the urgent need for transparency and truth in leadership.”
While steering clear of directly repeating conspiracy theories, IPOB emphasized the dangers of withholding vital information from citizens and called for greater accountability from those in power.
“This is a moment for sober reflection on the cost of silence and the erosion of public trust when truth is sacrificed for political convenience,” the group said.
IPOB also reiterated its long-standing demand for Kanu’s unconditional release, arguing that his warnings and insights are now being echoed in mainstream discourse.
The group’s reaction comes amid renewed public debate following Shehu’s acknowledgement of Buhari’s serious health challenges during his presidency. Although Shehu stopped short of confirming or denying any conspiracy theories, his remarks have reignited scrutiny of the Buhari administration’s handling of sensitive information.
IPOB concluded its statement by calling for justice, truth, and national reconciliation, insisting that Nigeria’s future depends on openness—not secrecy.
