Feral Boy Found Living with Dogs in Thailand After Years of Parental Neglect

In a heartbreaking case from northern Thailand, an eight-year-old boy was rescued by authorities after he was found living in squalor among wild dogs, having been deprived of basic human interaction for years.
The boy, now in the care of a local children’s home, was discovered during a joint operation by Thailand’s Education Ministry and Lap Lae police on June 30. Police raided the dilapidated hut where he lived with his mother and 23-year-old brother—both of whom later tested positive for drug use.
According to child rights activist Paveena Hongsakul, who brought the case to police attention, the child was so neglected that he had begun to mimic the behavior of the animals around him. “He didn’t speak, he just barked,” she said. “It was pitiful to see.”
The boy had reportedly turned to the dogs for companionship after being ignored by his family. Local residents, disturbed by the mother’s behavior—often seen begging in the area—had even warned their children to stay away from him.
Despite being eligible for free education, the boy was never allowed to attend school. “His mother hasn’t allowed him to go to school since he received a subsidy for free education,” said Paveena. “After getting the money, she simply kept him at home.”
Authorities confirmed that the boy had been starved of affection and proper care, and had effectively been left to survive in filth among the dogs. The local school had earlier flagged concerns, prompting Paveena to escalate the issue.
Following the raid, both adults were arrested and charged with drug use, while the child was relocated to a care facility where he will receive support, education, and medical attention.
“The boy will be given a chance at a good life. We’ll follow up with him to make sure he gets everything he needs,” Paveena assured.
This deeply disturbing case highlights the devastating impact of neglect and substance abuse on children—and the critical importance of vigilance from communities and schools.
