Ebonyi Village Lights Up with Self-Funded Electrification , Plans Road Construction

Residents of Nsuba Ettam Okpuitumo in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have taken development into their own hands, successfully extending electricity across the entire village through a self-funded project.

The project, led by the village chairman, Mr. Friday Hycent, and supported by his committee and the local age-grade groups, involved purchasing electric wires and materials reportedly worth millions of naira. The initiative aims to ensure that every household in the Ebonyi community has access to electricity.

Speaking about the achievement, a community member said, “We give ourselves light,” underscoring the collective determination to improve living conditions without waiting for external assistance.

The residents also commended the Cross River State Government for previously supporting the region with rural road and electricity projects, describing Cross River as “a good neighbour” whose efforts have inspired similar action.

“Nothing gives life meaning in our communities like electric light,” the spokesperson added.

Building on the success of the electrification project, the community has announced plans to begin constructing their own access roads. Contributions and preparations for the road project are expected to continue through 2027.
