Are There Vaccines Available For M-pox?

Yes, there are vaccines available for M-pox. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the use of the MVA-BN or LC16 vaccines, and the ACAM2000 vaccine as an alternative when the others are unavailable.
These vaccines were initially developed for smallpox and have been found effective against M-pox as well.
Vaccination is advised primarily for individuals at high risk of exposure, such as close contacts of confirmed M-pox cases or those in high-risk groups.
Mass vaccination is not currently recommended. Travelers who may be at risk should consult their healthcare provider for individual risk assessments regarding vaccination.
The vaccines provide a level of protection against both infection and severe disease, but immunity takes several weeks to develop after vaccination. It is important for vaccinated individuals to continue practicing preventive measures against M-pox.
VACCINES AVAILABLE FOR M-POX
1. JYNNEOS (Imvamune or Imvanex)
JYNNEOS, also known as Imvamune or Imvanex, is the primary vaccine available for M-pox. It was initially developed to protect against smallpox but has been found effective against M-pox as well.
JYNNEOS is a live, non-replicating vaccine, meaning it does not contain the live virus capable of causing disease. Instead, it uses a weakened virus to stimulate the immune system without causing illness.
The vaccine is administered in two doses, usually four weeks apart. It is recommended for individuals who have been exposed to the virus or are at high risk of exposure, such as healthcare workers and those in areas with active outbreaks.
2. ACAM2000
ACAM2000 is another vaccine that can be used against M-pox. Like JYNNEOS, it was originally developed for smallpox. ACAM2000 is a live, replicating vaccine, which means it contains a live virus that can replicate in the body. While effective, it comes with a higher risk of side effects compared to JYNNEOS.
ACAM2000 is administered as a single dose, usually through a small prick on the skin. The vaccine creates a small, controlled infection that triggers the immune system to build protection against the virus.
Because of its higher risk of side effects, ACAM2000 is generally reserved for individuals who cannot receive JYNNEOS or in situations where it is the only available option.
3. MVA-BN Vaccine
The MVA-BN (Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavarian Nordic) vaccine is another option that has shown promise in protecting against M-pox.
Similar to JYNNEOS, MVA-BN is a live, non-replicating vaccine. It is currently approved in some countries for both smallpox and M-pox prevention.
The vaccine is administered in two doses and is particularly useful in individuals who are at high risk of infection.
Importance of Vaccination
Getting vaccinated is essentialin protecting against M-pox. The available vaccines can significantly reduce the severity of the disease and prevent its spread. If you are in a high-risk group or live in an area with active cases, vaccination is highly recommended.
Conclusion
The vaccines available for M-pox play a vital role in preventing and controlling the disease. Whether it’s JYNNEOS, ACAM2000, or MVA-BN, getting vaccinated can protect you and those around you from this viral infection. Stay informed and take proactive steps to safeguard your health.
