ADC Presidential Aspirants Agree to Support Consensus Candidate for 2027 Election

Presidential hopefuls under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition have agreed in principle to sign a unity pact pledging support for whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.
According to LEADERSHIP Weekend, the agreement is aimed at fostering cohesion within the party and avoiding post-primary disputes. However, aspirants are still expected to jointly define the terms of a “transparent” and fair primary process before finalizing the pact.
Former Minister of Transportation and prominent member of the ADC coalition, Rotimi Amaechi, confirmed the development, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening the party’s internal structure and electoral readiness.
The party’s interim national chairman, Senator David Mark, had earlier assured party members of neutrality in the selection process. Speaking on July 8, Mark insisted that the ADC had no preferred candidate and pledged that the primary election would be transparent and credible under his leadership.
His comments came amid increasing speculation and internal maneuvering among top figures in the coalition vying for the party’s ticket.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, one of the key political figures linked to the coalition, recently signaled his intention to return to the presidential race. While receiving a delegation of Gombe stakeholders in Abuja last Saturday, he hinted at a renewed ambition for 2027. He later dismissed reports that he had agreed to step down in favor of a southern candidate.
Similarly, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi confirmed his intention to run again in 2027. In a recent interview, he ruled out the possibility of accepting a vice presidential offer and denied participating in any talks to that effect.
With political heavyweights like Obi, Atiku, and Amaechi now associated with the ADC coalition, the move to unite behind a single flagbearer is seen as a strategic attempt to consolidate opposition strength ahead of the next general election.
