Questions to Ask Before Applying for a Job
Job hunting can feel a little like dating were you’re looking for that perfect match, a place where you’ll thrive and grow but how can you be sure? It all starts with asking the right questions before applying for a job. The job market is competitive, but finding a role that fits your goals, values, and skills can make all the difference.
Why Ask Questions Before You Apply?
Have you ever jumped into a job only to realize three months later it’s not what you expected? That’s a pitfall most of us want to avoid. Taking the time to dig deeper before submitting your application saves you time and energy in the long run.
What Are Your Non-Negotiables?
Before anything else, get clear on your deal-breakers. For me, a flexible work environment and clear growth opportunities are essential. Ask yourself:
- What type of work-life balance do I need?
- What salary or benefits are non-negotiable?
- Is the company’s mission something I genuinely care about?
Sometimes job descriptions are like riddles. They sound impressive but leave you wondering what the day-to-day looks like. Reach out to someone in the company or do a little research. Ask:
- What does success look like in this role?
- Are the responsibilities clear, or are there hidden expectations?
- Who will I be working closely with?
Does the Company Align With Your Values?
Imagine loving your job but hating the company’s ethics. That’s a tough spot. Take time to check the company’s website, Glassdoor reviews, or news articles. Think about:
- Do their social and environmental stances align with mine?
- Is there a diverse and inclusive culture?
- How do employees speak about leadership?
These questions aren’t just fluffy extras, they shape how much you’ll enjoy going to work every day.
What Are the Growth Opportunities?
A great job isn’t just about now; it’s about where it can take you. Ask yourself (and them):
- Does this role align with my long-term goals?
- What training or mentorship opportunities are offered?
- Are there clear paths for advancement?
