Peter Obi commits to securing Farotimi’s bail
Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has pledged to meet the bail conditions for human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi was granted bail by an Ekiti Magistrate Court in a defamation case involving legal icon Afe Babalola.
The court set the bail conditions at a N30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must own a property), the surrender of his passport, and a restriction from granting media interviews.
The announcement of Obi’s decision was made by Tanko Yunusa, a former spokesperson for Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, through a statement shared on Friday via his X (formerly Twitter) account.
Yunusa stated that Obi, as an advocate for the rule of law, is committed to resolving the matter in a way that aligns with legal protocols and promotes fairness.
“I consulted His Excellency, Peter Obi, as the leader of the Obidient Movement. As someone who respects the rule of law, due process, and order, he has offered to fulfill Dele Farotimi’s bail conditions,” Yunusa said.
He also conveyed Obi’s appreciation to the judiciary and other stakeholders involved. “His priority is that the matter be resolved in the best interest of all parties and in line with our legal system. He extended his heartfelt gratitude to everyone concerned,” Yunusa added.
