Teacher Suspended for Assaulting Toddler in Lagos School
A teacher at Christ Mitots School in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has been suspended after a viral video showed her physically assaulting a three-year-old pupil during a numeracy class.
The viral video shared on social media, captured the teacher smacking the child for struggling with the lesson. The incident has sparked reactions, with many condemning the act as a violation of the Nigerian Child Rights Act.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) denounced the incident, explaining that schools must provide safe environments for children. The agency also made known, the state government’s commitment to zero tolerance for child abuse.
The Lagos Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the teacher’s arrest, stating she is in custody while investigations continue. He assured the public of a thorough probe into the matter.
Reacting to the incident, Christ Mitots School described the teacher’s behavior as unacceptable and contrary to its values. The management suspended her indefinitely and apologized to the affected child’s family.
The school also pledged to create measures to prevent a recurrence, including mandatory training for staff on child protection and positive disciplinary methods.
